How many of us are honestly loving what we’re doing? How many of us really look forward to going for work every morning? It’s obvious, there are very few of us in those categories.
They say, it’s never too late to switch to what you love. Be open to taking chances! Try everything! Learn during your journey to find your true calling! Because YOLO!
But is this really true? Is this even practical?
I strongly feel that the term ‘work-life balance’ was propagated by corporates, just so that the employees don’t feel bad about their 9+ hours of daily work. Possibly, the corporates wanted their employees to have an illusion of a ‘real life’ outside work!
We go to work in the mornings & come back late in the evenings, most often after a long tiring commute. Then we hardly have time left for dinner, post which we retire to bed. Where’s the time left to have this work-life balance? Seriously, what balance?
Let’s talk about trying multiple fields before we find our ‘true calling’. A lot of us actually have always known what our true passions are. But we chose not to fully chase them due to reasons like lack of financial stability in that field, lack of acceptance of individuals in that field by our society, our responsibilities towards our family, our family’s expectations from us… the list is endless! So, we settle with something mediocre. We cover up by saying that we’re still looking for our true purpose in life. The reality is that we simply harbour dreams, but lack the courage to act upon them.
How practical is it if we keep jumping fields every 2 years? The idea of trying everything before you settle for your true calling sounds romantic. But is it realistic?
Firstly, one won’t even be considered for a job by employers if she/he keeps switching every few years. We know how the hiring system works! They need ‘experience’! The truth is that ‘passion’ for that role, is always going to be secondary, if not a tertiary criteria to evaluate a candidate in the hiring process.
Secondly, let’s assume that one still chooses to keep moving jobs inspite of the risk of being rejected by future employers. Where will the ‘financial stability’ come from? Every job switch will pull down the individual to scratch in the next job, thus having a negative impact on the compensation value. Infact, will the individual even be at par with the other employees in that organisation? She/he will probably be compared with interns & new joinees!
Thirdly, do you really think that the society will look at such an individual in a respectable way? She/he will be called flaky, unstable, confused, immature, irresponsible, non-trustworthy, good for nothing, etc. And why? Just because she/he was searching for her/his true calling!
You see how this romantic idea of living your life for yourself and making mistakes strongly contradicts what exists in reality?
That’s why job enrichment, talent management & all that HR jargon, just like ‘work-life balance’ is a sham.
Honestly, that’s why most of us are unhappy with our life. That’s why we settle for mediocrity. But is it wrong to do so? No, nothing wrong. So, does that mean mediocrity is absolutely fine? No, it definitely isn’t a happy choice.
